        1. The itch.

I’m of the mind that everyone would benefit from periodic solo adventures on the road, although I suspect it’s much riskier for women than men. I tend to camp much of the time and usually don’t have a preset route nailed down tightly. A bit of seat of the pants increases the feel of adventure.

Two summers ago I did my solo Wild and Wooly West Tour: 5000+ miles through North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Nebraska, and Iowa (touching into Washington and Arizona) in nine days. Incredibly rich experience. This year I’m doing it again, going all the way to the coast over fourteen days.

My wife asks whether I wouldn’t rather have company, not that she could get away as a professional cellist, and I reply, No. I can focus on seeing and shooting, wherever, without concern for the interest level of my companion. I may get some interesting shots behind buildings and the like, but who would want to sit there as I’m taking pictures of trash cans?

Being an empty nester at this point helps a lot. If I had young kids at home, it wouldn’t be fair to leave her holding the bag.

          1. Yup, with 3 kids all in awkward stages, long on the road trips are difficult to muster, but I do have a girlfriend that is a great travel/photography buddy! 🙂
